There’s a rich history of road cycling in the area. The Tour de France has had numerous stage starts and finishes in Morzine or Avoriaz. The most recent was 2016, with not just a stage finish, but the coveted Etape du Tour – an event where anyone can try to ride a stage of the Tour de France and suffer just like the pros. Les Gets has also hosted the Criterium de Dauphiné and regularly been on the Tour de France route.
If you like bagging cols, you’ll find plenty around – 25 cols within 50 km! From the Col de Joux Verte, to the Joux Plane or Ramaz, you’ll be ticking off famous climbs every day. There are 15 mapped road cycling routes leaving from Morzine alone available to check out online or in a little printed guide. You can join guided and supported rides or head out alone following the signs and compare your strava stats to those of the pros!
If road cycling events are your thing, then you can time your stay to coincide with the local Cyclosportive on Sunday 17th June 2018, choose between the 100km or 155 km routes over the Joux Verte, Corbier, Grand Taillet, Jambaz and the famous Joux Plane cols to finish. There’s also the now famed Morzine-Avoriaz hill climb (Grimpée Cycliste). Taking place on Sunday 12th August 2018 it’s the fastest person up the 14,6km, 860m high climb of the Joux Verte. The record of 33 minutes by Bernard Hinault in 1979 still stands!
