Morzine Swimming Pool Complex

Morzine is very fortunate to have an amazing swimming pool complex situated in the town centre, in the Dereches Park.  There are both outdoor and indoor pools, so it can be enjoyed by all whether you are visiting in the winter or the summer months.  Not only does the complex have 6 pools, there is also a spa area, with saunas and turkish baths.

Outdoor Facilities:

  • 50m olympic swimming pool
  • teaching pool
  • paddling pool with slides & water activites
  • 80m waterslide
  • bouncy castle
  • volleyball pitch
  • grassy area ideal for picnics
  • sun loungers

Indoor Facilities:

  • 25m swimming pool
  • teaching pool
  • paddling pool
  • Spa area with sauna & turkish baths

There is also an excellent restaurant & bar, serving daily specials and snacks, or you can take your own picnic and use the grassed picnic area at the far end of the pool.  During the summer months the indoor & outdoor complex is open from 8am – 7pm and during the winter season the indoor pool is open from midday.  In the summer months, access to the pool complex is free with your Multipass.

Lac des Ecoles, les Gets

Situated just above the village of les Gets, the Lac des Ecoles is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon.  It is open every afternoon from 20th June through to the 3rd September 2018.  There are big grassy beaches ideal for picnics and games, and the children can swim safely in the roped off area, as there are lifeguards on duty also.  There is also a water slide, volleyball pitch and paddling pool area.  Access to the lake is free with your Multipass or €3 per person without it.

New for the 2017 summer season was the WiBit. This is an inflatable activity area on the lake, suitable for children from 6 years and above.  It is €10 for a 45 minute session (with €2 reduction if you have a multipass).  Great fun for adults and kids alike.

Lake Montriond

Lake Montriond is one of those unforgetable places; the combination of the turquoise blue water and the stunning backdrop of the surrounding mountains are truly amazing.  The lake is an idea area to spend a day, either swimming, walking or just relaxing on the grassy areas at both ends of the lake.  You can also rent paddle boards and kayaks from the centre next to the childrens playground.

It is an ideal place for children also, as there is a smaller shallow swimming lake, a childrens playground and poney rides around the lake.

There are also 2 wonderful restaurants situated at either end of lake, le Bout du Lac and the Verdoyant. Both have great sun terraces and fantastic views.  New for this summer also is a snack bar, located in the car park at the Montriond end of the lake.  Ideal for those ice creams on a hot summers day!

Horse riding in Morzine is a wonderful way to discover the surrounding villages, forests and countryside and is an activity for all the family.  There are several options in the area, ranging from lessons for beginners in the school and mountain treks for the more experienced rider.

Le Ranch des Portes du Soleil – St Jean d’Aulps

Come and join Sam and Catherine, who run the Ranch in the heart of the village of St Jean d’Aulps.  You can book into week long lessons for complete beginners, pony treks for children, or longer treks into the mountains for the more experienced.  Their stables are situated next to the river in St Jean d’Aulps, with plenty of treks leaving directly from the school.

Prices range from €20 for a childrens pony trek, €55 for a 2 hour trek and €99 for the whole day trek into the mountains.

Ranch des Portes du Soleil

You can even organise an outing with the horses in the winter months, called Ski Joering.  No need for saddles, just put on your skis and let the horses pull you through the snow, along specially prepared pistes.  Definately an experience you will never forget!  This is a very old activity from Sweden, that was used as a method of transport during the winter months.

Morzine is a major destination for road bikers in the French Alps.  The Tour de France has had numerous stage starts and finishes in Morzine or Avoriaz. The most recent was 2016, with not just a stage finish, but the coveted Etape du Tour – an event where anyone can try to ride a stage of the Tour de France and suffer just like the pros.

If its the big climbs you are after then there are plenty to choose from, with over 25 cols in a 50 km radius of Morzine.  There are 15 mapped road cycling route from Morzine alone, but the following are the big 3 famous climbs that have been regularly included in the Tour de France:

Col de Joux Plane (altitude 1700m)

Made famous by various inclusions into the Tour de France, and especially memorable for putting Lance Armstrong in trouble during the 2000 Tour de France.  This col is a short but very sharp climb, with an average gradient of 8.9% over 11.1km.  From Morzine it is a 52km loop, taking in les Gets, Tanninges, Samoens, Col de Joux Plane and then the descent back into Morzine.

Col de Ramaz (altitude 1619m)

Another favourite of the Tour de France, along with amazing mountain views of Mt Blanc.  Although this is not as tough a climb as the Joux Plane, the Ramaz has an average gradient of 7% and a vertical gain of 1350 metres!

From Morzine there is a 58km circuit, starting off with Les Gets and the descent into Tanninges, then along the valley floor to Mieussy.  The climb up to the Col de Ramaz at 1619 metres and then the descent via the Col de l’Encrenaz and back to Morzine.

Col de Joux Vert (altitude 1800m)

This is a must do climb for most cyclists coming to the area, from the centre of Morzine up the hairpin bends to the ski resort of Avoriaz.  There is also an annual race, the Grimpée Cycliste, this year on the 5th August.  The fastest time ever recorded was by French rider Bernard Hinault in 33 minutes, during the 1979 Tour de France.  His record still stands today!  You can get a time stamp card from the Morzine Tourist Office and stamp your card in the machine by the blue start line, just up from the Morzine Mairie, and then again at the top in Avoriaz by the Visitor Centre.  Go into the Morzine Tourist Office on your return to receive a certifcate with your time printed on it!

White Water Rafting on the River Dranse

White Water Rafting is one of the most popular summer activities in the Alps!  It is something everyone should try at least once and is a perfect activity for all the family as they can children from 8 years old.  The boats can take up to 7 people and all the equipment is provided; wetsuits, booties, life jackets & helmets.

There are various companies based in the area who all offer a similar service and routes down the River Dranse.  Their bases are located along the river, about a 20 minute drive from Morzine.  Most of the proposed routes take around 2-2.5 hours including the safety briefing, but there are also more advanced routes for the real adrenaline junkies!

The guides on the rafting trips make it a really fun experience, and stop frequently getting you to jump in off rocks and small cliffs, capsizing the boat and swimming through rapids.

You can also try hot-dogging and hydrospeeding.  Hot-Dogging is a smaller inflatable canoe which seats 2 people, and you are guided in groups down the river.  Hydro Speeding is swimming though the rapids in a padded wetsuit using a float – definately for the more adventurous!

Prices start from €39 per person for the ‘Classic Route’ and make sure you book in advance.
